TODAY’S AI SPOTLIGHT

1 Apple launches its first touchscreen MacBook
Tim Cook announced that touch has come to the Mac. The new MacBook Pro has a PROLED XDR display, which Apple calls the best laptop screen in the world, plus a Dynamic Island-style hub for the tools you use most. It runs on M5 Pro or M5 Max chips for on-device AI and lasts up to 24 hours on a charge. Pre-orders are open, and it ships November 6. See how it compares to the regular MacBook Pro.
2 Google's Gemini 4 Carbon takes the top spot in AI rankings
Weeks after Gemini 4 Argon, Google released Gemini 4 Carbon as its new flagship. It now ranks first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra. Google says it is built for long-running work and has run for days on internal projects. It is rolling out first to cyber defenders through Google's Fairwind Program.
3 Amazon shows off five new Alexa devices, including a 3D map of your home
Amazon's lineup includes two new products: the Alexa Photo Frame and the Echo Time smart alarm clock, along with upgrades to its smart TV and two speakers. The new Alexa Home Map builds an interactive 3D view of your home. Apple launched a similar smart-home line with LG about two weeks ago.
4 AI formalizes one of the biggest proofs in math history
Axiom says it has fully converted the Classification of Finite Simple Groups into Lean, a language computers can check. The proof, often called the periodic table of symmetry, runs about 15,000 pages and took more than 100 mathematicians across generations. Axiom has invited experts to check it.
THE HUMAN TOUCH IS BACK
Why Prada hired a Disney animator in the age of AI ads
The campaign. Prada's latest ad is a hand-drawn, Disney-style film starring Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke, with animals drawn by John Pomeroy, who worked on Pocahontas, The Rescuers, and Atlantis.
It's not just Prada. Hermès asked woodworker Thibaut Malet to build a miniature version of its new flagship store. And Life magazine is coming back as a premium print title. Its letter to readers argues that the faster we scroll, the less we see. The next issue runs 250 pages from more than 100 contributors.
The idea behind it. This is called effort signaling: visible craft makes something feel more valuable. It now applies to digital media too, not just handbags.
The data. A Harvard Business Review study found that AI-made ads perform worse than human-made ones, even when viewers can't tell which is which.
What to take from it. Luxury and craft brands are selling the human touch. For most other brands, AI is still a fast, cheap way to test ideas. The real choice isn't AI or no AI, but deciding where AI fits in your work.
AI AND YOUR DECISIONS

Experts followed their AI's preferences, even when they were random
The study. Anthropic researcher Alex Tamkin and his colleagues studied 50 professional analysts who use Claude Code regularly.
The finding. The analysts' choices often matched the AI agent's preferences, even when those preferences had been assigned at random.
Why it matters. When AI helps experts make judgment calls, it can quietly shape what they decide. If you lean on an agent for analysis, it's worth asking which choices are really yours.
