1 Block's new voice model breathes, pauses, and runs on a MacBook
Jack Dorsey's Block released Dessa, a voice model trained from scratch on real human conversation instead of written text. That's why it picks up pauses, breathing, tone, and even sarcasm. It can listen and talk at the same time, and it's small enough to run on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip or better.
2 Anthropic and OpenAI respond to Black October
Anthropic showed that formal verification can rewrite programs with mathematically proven security guarantees. OpenAI explained how it is securing its training environments. And Sam Altman said AI can now find bugs even at the hardware level, adding that he no longer thinks every bug can be patched.
3 Mistral bets on open models to take on Big Tech
Mistral is pitching open-weight models and "sovereign AI" that customers can run on their own servers as its edge against U.S. and Chinese rivals. It raised €3B in September at a valuation above €21B, in a round led by Samsung. In a Bloomberg interview, CEO Arthur Mensch said its newest model beats Chinese models on cybersecurity, though he didn't say which models or how it was measured.
4 Grok shares the first minutes of its AI-made Odyssey

Jensen Huang's new favorite toy is a $399 robot duck

The viral moment. At GTC Berlin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang played with a group of Microducks, and the video spread fast. The 25 cm robots from Pollen Robotics sit, nap, and do somersaults when you tell them to. They have been popular for their cute look since their launch.
What's inside. Each duck has 15 motors, a camera, and lidar. It can walk, pick things up, get back on its feet after a fall, and even roller-skate.
The demand. Hugging Face's Clem Delangue says preorders are close to 20,000. At $399 each, deliveries are expected before Christmas, according to TechCrunch.
Why builders care. Owners can teach the duck new moves in a simulation using reinforcement learning, then load those moves onto the robot and share them. People are already racing them and playing football with controllers. One catch: only the software is open source, not the hardware designs.
Want one? Preorders are open on the Microduck page. It's best suited to developers and hobbyists.
Kimi K3.1 Pro beats Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra, at a lower price

What it is. Moonshot released Kimi K3.1 Pro on Friday. It is a post-trained version of Kimi K3 with a 1M-token context window. The company calls it its most capable model and says it is strong at coding, 3D creation, and financial research.
Where it ranks. It placed fourth on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a score of 55. That puts it ahead of Anthropic's Fable 5.1 and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, and behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 58.
Fewer made-up answers. Its score on the AA-Omniscience Index rose to 30 from 20 for K3, and its hallucination rate fell to 44% from 53%.
The price. The API costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, a third less than K3, according to The Information. A Highspeed version runs two to three times faster.
The fine print. Full weights are due by November 4, and Moonshot's own benchmark claims haven't been independently checked. If you run coding agents or finance workflows, it's worth a test as a cheaper option. You can try it here.
